What to look for: accreditation, communication, turnaround and experience with tricky sites.

Not all scaffolding companies work the same way, and picking the right one makes a real difference to how smoothly your project runs. Whether you are a homeowner planning a reroof or a trade team juggling several sites at once, the company you choose for access affects your timeline, your safety, and how much you end up thinking about the scaffolding at all. Ideally, not much.
Here is what is actually worth checking before you book.
Accreditation comes first
Site Safe accreditation is the baseline, not a bonus. It tells you the company has been assessed against recognised health and safety standards, which matters when you have got people working at height on your property or site. If a scaffolding company cannot point to formal accreditation, that is worth asking about directly rather than assuming it is covered.
Communication before the job starts
A good scaffolding company should be easy to get hold of before you have even booked anything. Are they clear about what they need from you, such as site access, photos, or measurements? Do they explain what the setup will look like and how long the team will be on site? Vague answers early on tend to turn into bigger headaches once the job is underway. Clear communication from the first phone call is usually a decent sign of how the rest of the job will go.

Experience with tricky or awkward sites
Plenty of scaffolding jobs are straightforward. Plenty are not. Narrow driveways, steep sections, tight boundaries, or heritage properties all call for a team that has actually solved these problems before, not one working it out for the first time on your roof. When you are talking to a scaffolding company, it is worth asking whether they have handled sites similar to yours. A team with genuine experience in awkward access will usually have a straightforward answer, because they have done it before.
Turnaround and reliability
Scaffolding is rarely the end goal. It is what needs to happen before the roofers, painters, or builders can get started, which means delays have a habit of pushing the whole project back. A company that stands by its estimates and its timing means the other teams on site are not left waiting around for access to be sorted. Ask how the company handles scheduling, and whether they keep you updated if anything changes.
The right service for the job
Scaffolding, roof edge protection, and shrinkwrap all solve different problems, and a good company will help you work out which one you actually need rather than defaulting to whatever is easiest for them. Roof edge protection is often the right call for quicker jobs where full scaffolding is not needed. Shrinkwrap comes into play when weather protection matters as much as access. A company that takes the time to match the solution to the job, instead of upselling the biggest option, is one worth working with.
